A home kitchen on the docks

Tara's Bakes is a registered food business in East Float Quay, Birkenhead — the old warehouse apartments looking over Wirral Waters.

Milk cakes started as a Friday treat for the building: vanilla sponge soaked overnight in three milks, piped in a gold cup, boxed and handed over downstairs. Neighbours asked for brownies, then cookies, then a mixed box for the office. The list is still weekly, still small-batch, still baked the day before you collect it.

There is no counter and no walk-in. If you live in the quay you collect from the ground floor. If you live elsewhere on the Wirral we will meet you in Birkenhead or bring the box to you for £2.

The Friday bake box. Order anything from the menu by Wednesday 9pm, we bake Thursday, and you collect Friday between 5 and 8pm from the ground floor — we'll message you the exact spot when we confirm. No delivery charge, no minimum. Resident orders get first pick of limited bakes.

Baked in Birkenhead. Collected in the building, from town, or dropped to your door for a flat £2.

Delivery covers the peninsula — Wallasey and New Brighton over the water, Oxton and Prenton up the hill, Heswall, West Kirby and Hoylake along the coast, Moreton, Upton, Bromborough and Bebington. Liverpool and Cheshire on request if the box will travel.

Ribbons, a note on the box, and something that actually tastes homemade.

Birthdays, thank-yous, Eid, Mother's Day, a new flat in the quay, Friday in the office. Tell us the message in the order notes and it goes on the box. Sharing trays serve 8–10; a milk cake box of four or six is the usual gift. Celebration trays need about a week's notice — we do not make stacked wedding cakes from this kitchen.

How it works

Send your order. Check out as a guest or with an account. You can still message Instagram if you prefer.
We confirm. We bake to order in small batches, so we'll reply with a collection slot and how to pay. Bigger orders, celebrations and Eid boxes: message us a week ahead.
Collect, or we deliver. Residents collect in the building on Friday evening. Everyone else can collect from Birkenhead or have it delivered across Wirral for £2.

Allergens and care

Our kitchen handles milk, egg, wheat, soya, peanuts and tree nuts (pistachio, hazelnut, almond). Every box comes with a full ingredient and allergen label. We can't guarantee any bake is free from nuts. Milk cakes must be kept refrigerated and eaten within three days; brownies, blondies and cookies keep five days in an airtight tin.

We do not offer gluten-free, vegan or nut-free bakes. It is a domestic kitchen without a separate prep area, so we cannot honestly say a tray is safe for coeliac disease or a nut allergy. Celery, crustaceans, fish, lupin, molluscs, mustard, sesame and sulphites are not used as ingredients.

Before you message

How do I order?: Open the menu, add what you want, and check out as a guest or with a Tara's Bakes account. It is only booked when we confirm the total and a slot. Instagram still works if you prefer to message.
Can I just turn up?: No. There is no shop and no leftover counter. Everything is baked to the Wednesday list.
Do you deliver to Liverpool?: Wirral is the regular run for £2. Liverpool or Cheshire only if we can make the trip that Friday — ask in the notes.
Can you write on the box?: Yes. Put the message in the order notes. Keep it short enough to fit on a ribboned lid.
Are the bakes vegetarian?: Yes — no meat or gelatine. They are not vegan. Milk cakes are dairy through and through.
What about gluten-free or nut-free?: We cannot do those from this kitchen. See the allergen table above.
How do I pay?: Pay now at checkout as a guest or while signed in, or wait for confirmation and pay by bank transfer or cash on collection.
Do you use cookies?: No advertising or analytics cookies. Accounts and checkout use essential session cookies. This device may remember light/dark mode. See the cookie policy.
